More War & Battle Tips
-- If your city is about to be attacked by "stacked" enemy
units
, you can use any offensive unit to attack. As long as there is one more enemy unit remaining, your unit will return to your city after it is done(as opposed to being exposed in a weakened condition outside). Mounted
units
such as knights and cavalry can attack at distance and return to the city because of their increased movement. By using the mounted
units
and also bombarding with catapults or cannons, you can knock down a large opposition force to a reasonable size.
-- If you are the first civilization to introduce knights, cavalry or infantry, take advantage of this by launching an assault on your enemies. These
units
have significant advantages over their predecessors. You can roll through many cities this way.
-- It may be necessary for you to take certain natural resources (saltpeter, rubber, oil) by force in order to assure that you can build upgraded
units
like musketmen and infantry. It is worth the momentary discomfort. If you do not make the move, your position will erode while the leaders of other nations build their military.
-- In the early phases of civilization building, be sure that you have one of your top production cities with a barracks. Dedicate this city to churn out veteran
units
.
-- If you have outmoded ships that aren't worth the price to upgrade and you don't want to disband them, use them as a "coast guard" to place around your continents. They can alert you to movements of enemy ships and can weaken them enough for your modern ships to take out.
-- If your civilization's unique
units
are early
units
, such as Jaguar Warrior or Impi, consider building a massive force and smothering your opponents while they are still in the warrior/spearman phase. If you wait until they develop more advanced
units
, you are out of luck. An Impi is not going to defeat a Rifleman.
Barbarians
-- Do not let barbarians hang around. Although they are not much of a match in combat, they can destroy improvements and colonies. You almost always have the advantage if you attack barbarians first.
-- If possible, prevent ship-borne barbarians from landing by sinking their galleys or positioning land
units
that block landing spaces.
-- If you are alerted about a barbarian uprising, move
units
there quickly. An uprising can result in large numbers of barbarian horsemen.
